IS IT TRUE JULY 18, 2017

first_imgIS IT TRUE we are being told that members of the Evansville City Council have finally realized that they have been mis-lead by the Winnecke Administration concerning the major financial shortfalls facing them in the upcoming 2018 city budget?IS IT TRUE that former City Council President and Finance Chairmen John Friend-CPA predicted that starting in 2017 will be the beginning of major financial problems for the City of Evansville?  …it looks like Mr. Friends predictions may be spot on?IS IT TRUE that people who are served by the City of Evansville Water and Utility Department received a fear inducing letter this month with their bill warning that if their water service line breaks, repairs will cost them thousands of dollars?…the mailing contained an advertising slick for a water line coverage insurance plan from HomeServe offering “Peace of Mind” for only $5.99 a month, on Evansville Water and Sewer Utility letterhead?…the EWSU even had the audacity to claim that using their letterhead to hawk insurance policies was customer service outreach?…while the slick never said so, the reality is that the breaks that it was hawking policies for only happen in houses over 50 years old due to advancements in materials in newer homes?IS IT TRUE the City got a good payday for allowing HomeServe to solicit EWSU customers for service contracts too?…the Water and Sewer Utility Department received $50,000 for lending the official credibility of local government to a Connecticut based insurance peddler  and will receive a 10 percent commission of all local contracts sold?…this along with a similar service contract implemented by Vectren for energy delivery insurance at roughly the same time is a trend across the country to use authority of government to intimidate people into buying insurance they have never heard of so the utilities can fatten up the bottom line for their own purposes?IS IT TRUE in the case of the City of Evansville the utility plans to use that money to set up yet another redistribution scheme to help people deemed by them to be low income people pay past-due water bills?…of course those past due bills will go to the City for their troubles?…cities all across America including Louisville are cashing in on these type of questionable insurance offerings like this to buy votes and stick their nose where it isn’t wanted or needed?…some municipalities have turned away from such partnerships, and instead warn customers to do their research before purchasing such plans?IS IT TRUE that HomeServe’s ad slick claims the average cost to replace the line is $2,587 but local plumbers say it is more often around $1,500?…HomeServe service agreement promises to pay for all repairs to that line, caused by normal wear and tear but excludes damages caused by negligence, or “unusual circumstances?”…we wonder if a pipe being bent by tree roots would constitute normal wear and tear because that is often the source of such problems?…while the City of Evansville Water and Sewer Utilities Department is calling this a win-win, we have to wonder who is the winner?…the only certain winners are the EWSU and the darn insurance company?IS IT TRUE that the individuals who serve on the City Of Evansville Water and Utilities Board of Directors are all appointed by the Mayor?  …current members of this Board are: Barry Russell, Steve Heldorn, Michael Weber, Robert Dillow and Archie Carter?  …that the mission statement of the Evansville Water & Sewer Utility Board shall have the responsibility for the operation of the Water Utility and for the operation of the Sewer Utility of the City?  …It will strive to provide better service to the users, make for more efficient operation, and/or reduce expenses?IS IT TRUE that a group of private citizens has formed a group to “Support Those Who Protect US”?  …that people from all walks of life shall be holding a “Public Safety Appreciation Ceremony” on August 23, 2017 on the steps of the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum?  …stay turned for additional information concerning this long overdue public event thanking the “Public Service Employees” of Vanderburgh County for doing an outstanding job in protecting us? Upholding complexity

first_imgAbout a year ago, Jacob Ming-Trent vowed never to play a slave again.“We need more complex storytelling,” said the actor during an interview on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, recalling the reasons behind the decision. “We need positive images that aren’t all tracking back to me picking cotton.”But then came an offer for a part in “Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2, & 3),” a new play by the Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks that follows the life of a Texas slave — Hero — who joins the Confederate Army with his master in return for the promise of freedom. It’s a complex drama, alternately fierce and funny. One read through the script and Ming-Trent was hooked. He signed on for two roles — as a member of a group of slaves, and as the talking “Odyssey Dog,” a conflicted companion to the protagonist of Parks’ three-hour epic.It was the playwright’s “different perspective” that convinced Ming-Trent to join up.“She was saying: ‘We have to reframe this. We can’t allow people who have told the story incorrectly or have left out important details [to] win the day. Sometimes, we have to go back in and say … ‘This is a little more complex.’”“Father,” which opened Friday, is part of the American Repertory Theater’s Civil War Project marking the 150th anniversary of the nation’s bloodiest conflict. The play is a collaboration with the Public Theater of New York, where it debuted in the fall to strong reviews; it was recently named a finalist for the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History. In the first hour, “A Measure of a Man,” Hero struggles with the decision to follow his master into battle. Part two, “A Battle in the Wilderness,” finds Hero and his master separated from their regiment with a captive Union soldier. “The Union of My Confederate Parts” has Hero return to those he left behind to face the choices he made.Parks — a onetime MacArthur “Genius” and the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, for 2002’s “Topdog/Underdog” — said that in contrast to some of her past work, “Father” developed at a slow burn. Indeed, even now, after six years of work, she’s not done tinkering. Recently she inserted a stage direction for Hero to “hold up his hands reminiscent of ‘Hands up, don’t shoot,’” in reference to the protests that followed the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.Still, the playwright bristled at the notion that “Father” is about race.“We should not be reduced to a four-letter word,” said Parks, taking a break from a recent rehearsal.Instead, she said, the play explores a range of emotions and relationships, and asks difficult, sometimes impossible questions about love, honesty, truth, and freedom.“It touches on things that we are going through, both we of 2015 who are of African descent, and those of us who are not.”Much of the play, said Ming-Trent, “is about freedom and what is freedom, really. And how do you become free? And once you’ve made the decision to be free or not to be free, what that does.”The play’s director, Jo Bonney, a white woman from Australia, engaged with the material without a second thought over her superficial distance from it.“In the end as a director you’re telling a story and the greatest gift that you can be given is a script that is a powerful piece of storytelling. For me, whether I am male or female or what my color is or my background, it’s still a great piece of storytelling and my job is to tell that story.”So far, so good, as least according to the judgment of a most trusted adviser — Eric Bogosian, the actor-director who also happens to be her husband.“I always bring him into first previews,” said Bonney, who praised Bogosian as a “primal audience member,” keenly able to gauge if her work is hitting its marks.“He was so excited to see these kinds of performances on stage,” said Bonney, “and storytelling that was this deep and this funny.”“Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3)” runs at the A.R.T. through March 1.last_img read more

Can Spurs Halt City’s Premier League Run?Â

first_imgPep Guardiola’s hunger to make history with Manchester City remains undiminished after his side became the first in the history of the English top flight to win 15 successive games.City reached the milestone with a ruthless 4-0 victory at Swansea City on Wednesday, which preserved their massive 11-point lead at the Premier League summit. Manchester City faced their biggest test so far in this season Premier League last Sunday when they made a short trip to Old Trafford against bitter rival, Manchester United and Pep Guardiola got the better of old foe-Jose Mourinho, 2-1,and established an 11-point lead even with the league not yet at half way. The Citizens would hope to continue that run as they welcome another top flight team- Tottenham Hotspurs to the Etihad this weekend. A victory for the host would make the league a one-horse race, but in Spurs they have a real battle at hand They will face a sterner test today at home to a resurgent Tottenham Hotspur, but Guardiola is relishing the prospect of facing a rival team whose approach to the game chimes with his own.“Tottenham, with Chelsea, is the best team in the way to play football,” Guardiola said.“They don’t expect the other ones to take the initiative, they want to make their own game. It is another amazing test for us.“It is every three days. After Tottenham it is Leicester in the Carabao Cup, so there is not too much time to recover.“But we are ready to face them and try to keep that level we have shown in the last period.”City’s win at Swansea made them the first team in the history of English league football to have won 15 games in a row and they now have new milestones in sight.Beat Spurs at the Etihad Stadium and Guardiola will match his longest run of successive league wins with the great Barcelona team he led to a La Liga and Champions League double in 2010-11.He would then be just three wins off the overall record for Europe’s top five leagues, which he also set – a 19-game winning streak with Bayern Munich in 2013-14.City’s relentless form, and the spellbinding quality of their football, has led some observers to suggest they could be the finest team England has ever seen. But far from dreading the trip to the Etihad, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino will savour it.After four league games without a win, Spurs have won on their last two outings, crushing Stoke City 5-1 and beating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0.Victory over Brighton on Wednesday took Spurs back into the top four and Pochettino says he and his players will travel to the northwest in buoyant mood.“We’re going to Manchester thinking we can win,” said the Argentinian, whose team came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at City last season.“We’re going to enjoy it, because it’s a fantastic challenge to play against Manchester City. They’re the best team in England and one of the best in Europe.“I’m so excited to play, because I love to play against teams and managers like Guardiola that are the best. I’m so motivated and so happy that we are going to play a team at their best.”Relations between the two managers were not as cordial in October, after Pochettino took exception to Guardiola’s description of his side as “the Harry Kane team”.Pochettino branded the comments “disrespectful”, but Guardiola said the Spurs manager had “made a mistake” in his interpretation of the remark.Kane, who found the net twice against Stoke, needs to score four more goals to beat Alan Shearer’s 1995 record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year.Dele Alli will expect to be recalled after starting the win over Brighton on the bench, but Toby Alderweireld remains injured and Davinson Sanchez is suspended.Sergio Aguero impressed on his return to City’s starting XI at Swansea, scoring a slick solo goal to seal victory, and will hope to keep his place against Spurs.Kyle Walker and Leroy Sane are both expected to return to the starting line-up, having watched the Swansea game from the bench.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more
