DeGroot carries Big Mo into Kootenay Championships

Rogers tuned up for today’s Kootenay High School Cross Country Championships by capturing the West Kootenay title last week at Camp Busk Ski Trails south of Nelson.DeGroot edged rival Lukas Smith of Kaslo’s J.V. Humphries for the West Kootenay crown in the Senior Boy’s race.Hunter Stanway of J.V. Humphries finished third followed by Steven Hernandez of Mount Sentinel and Burno Moro of LVR.The Kootenay Championships are set for the same course starting at 3 p.m. with the Junior Girls and Boy’s races. The Senior Girl’s race follows at 3:30 p.m. with the boy’s event the final one staged, beginning at 4 p.m.The top 20 runners and three school teams qualify for the B.C. High School Cross Country Championships November 6th at Oak Bay in Victoria.In the Senior Girl’s race, Jill Reynolds of Rossland edged teammate Susan Fraser for the West Kootenay crown. Darya Huser of Salmo captured third spot followed by Mount Sentinel’s Kate Weir and Kiraya Spencer of LVR.Darian Johnson of Trafalgar narrowly defeated Bradley Spurge of Mount Sentinel to snare the title in the Bantam Boy’s event.Johnson blazed over the course in a time of 14 minutes and 17 seconds. Spurge hit the tape 14 seconds behind the Totem. Samuel Mathea finished third at 14:36. Richard Gregory of Trail’s J. Lloyd Crowe took fourth with Strider Scott of Trafalgar fifth.Sam Kuch, Galin Boulanger, Keiran Marchand, Spencer Atkings and Conan Park, all of Trafalgar, rounded out the field.In the Bantam Girls race, Tara Yowek of Trafalgar edged out teammate Naomi Perkins to claim the overall title.Robyn Locke of Home Links was third with Gmina Borhi and Clare Young, both of Trafalgar, fourth and fifth, respectively. Maya Wood of Trafalgar and Jessica Paul of Salmo placed sixth and seventh, respectively.Four Salmo runners, Courtney Sutherland, Roxanne Sorenson, Jordana Scott and Rowan Dukart, next followed Sian Nielson of [email protected]last_img
