But Mourinho has yet to win an away game against a fellow “big six” side since taking charge at Old Trafford, with seven games at Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham yielding just three points and one goal. That run includes a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal last season as Wenger recorded his first competitive victory over Mourinho at the 16th attempt. The pair have shared a tumultuous relationship over the years but Wenger does not believe Mourinho, renowned for his defensive tactics in such matches, will only be eyeing a clean sheet in north London this weekend.Asked whether he expected Mourinho to park the bus with a defensive outlook on Saturday, Wenger replied: “No, I don’t expect anything special.“I just expect us to be ready to recover now. Man United is a strong team and I expect us just to cope with the problems they will give us. They will attack as well. They will not only defend.“It is a game between Arsenal and Man United at home. I just want to focus and to prepare well my team, and give my team a good chance to win the game.“Man United is doing well at the moment, we are doing well at the moment, so it looks to be a promising game.”Arsenal welcome United having won their previous three Premier League games to move into the Premier League top four.Victory in the north London derby at home to Tottenham was followed up with a last-gasp win at Burnley before Huddersfield were dispatched 5-0 at the Emirates on Wednesday. That was a 12th successive home win as Alexandre Lacazette, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil all got on the scoresheet while Olivier Giroud hit a brace. It was not all positives for Wenger, however, as Lacazette was substituted at half-time with a groin injury, while Sanchez was also replaced late on after feeling his hamstring.Wenger expects Sanchez to be fit to face United, but said club-record signing Lacazette will “certainly be out” of the contest.“Sanchez had a little hamstring problem, that’s why I took him off, but I think he will be all right,” he said.“Look, we have offensive weapons, you know. We have Danny Welbeck, we have Giroud, we have Jack Wilshere who all came on. They are all offensive players.“I will see what I do for Saturday but ideally you wanted him (Lacazette) there.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)

PHOTO/Raymond MakhayaNAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 29- On Tuesday, during his swearing in at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a directive that citizens from the East African Community will not need passports to travel into the country nor permits to work in Kenya. The discussion on the same has now been spilled into the local football arena with questions amounting as to whether East African Community players will be regarded as foreign players or not. The EAC is made up of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi.Currently, the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) has capped the maximum number of foreign players a club can sign at five and this includes East African community players.“Well, it is something that just happened yesterday and we are yet to know whether or not it is law. As KPL, we operate with the law of the land. We have a Governing Council meeting tomorrow (Thursday) and this will come up in discussion,” KPL’s head of logistics and operations Frank Okoth told Capital Sport.FKF CEO Robert Muthomi and KPL logistics officer Frank Okoth.PHOTO/Timothy OlobuluIn the event that the same is adopted, then it will open up a door for clubs to fish out for more foreign players from the rest of the continent to add on to the huge Ugandan legion that currently plies its trade in the country.AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia who will represent the country at next year’s CAF competitions might see this as an opportunity to strengthen their squads to lift themselves into the same competitive levels as the opponents they will face.“This is a good thing and a bad thing. Clubs with money will now have a chance of signing more players which might be good especially with the CAF Competitions. But on the other side of the coin, it might be suicidal for the national team football and growth of talent in the country,” AFC Leopards chairman Dan Mule said. The same sentiments were shared by KPL’s Okoth who is of the opinion that an influx of players outside the country will water down the growth of local talent. In their current squad, Gor Mahia has one Ugandan, three Rwandese and one Burundian and if the same is effected, their foreign quota will drop down to zero and they will head most likely to West Africa and fish for more players.“You might find that in one instant, a team can field a squad of entirely foreign based players. That is not good for the country,” Okoth warned.AFC Leopards head coach Robert Matano (left) and his assistant Tom Juma during their GOtv Shield match against Bidco United at the Thika sub County Stadium on July 27, 2017.Photo/TIMOTHY OLOBULUAFC Leopards assistant coach Tom Juma also sees this as an impediment to local football, if KPL takes this route.“The national team will be hurt in the long run. If we have less players playing in the top league, then we won’t have good players for the national team. I believe we have enough talent in Kenya and we should not flood in more foreign players. Let’s build our players,” Juma, a former Kenyan international said.An example where this is implemented is in Europe where players from the European Union are not regarded as ‘foreigners’ and teams can sign as many as they wish. It is more profound in the English Premier League which has attracted many players due to its commercial appeal. The Football Association (FA) had brought this up for discussion a while ago, with their main concern being around their national team.0Shares0000(Visited 3 times, 1 visits today)
But they still had too much quality for the Championship strugglers as two great strikes from Willian added to goals from Pedro Rodriguez and Olivier Giroud’s first for Chelsea put the hosts 4-0 up by half-time.Conte made seven changes in all from the side that beat West Brom 3-0 on Monday to ease the mounting pressure on his job after damaging defeats by Bournemouth and Watford.Once again the Chelsea support showed their backing for the former Juventus boss, but more challenging tests lie ahead in their bid for Champions League glory, and a place back in the competition next year via the top four of the Premier League should they fall short.Barca’s visit to the Bridge on Tuesday is followed by consecutive trips to Manchester United and Manchester City on league duty before the return leg at the Camp Nou on March 14.“We lost two games at the end of a busy period. Now we have the right confidence again,” said Conte.“But in the next two weeks we have to play massive games and we must be strong – Barcelona, United and City. We are ready.”Willian did no harm to his case to start against the Catalans with a stunning all-round display capped by his two goals.“For sure, his performance was impressive,” added Conte.“I hope to see always this type of performance because, when Willy plays in this way, it is a great joy for me, the team, the club and our fans.”The Brazilian opened the scoring after just two minutes as he jinked inside onto his weaker left foot but still produced a fine curling shot into the far corner.– Relieved Giroud –A former Barca duo combined for the second as Cesc Fabregas’s lofted pass freed Pedro in behind the Hull defence to slot past David Marshall.Willian showed he is capable of scoring from range off either foot as his low drive cushioned the post on its way past Marhsall moments later for his 10th goal of the season.Giroud then cut a relieved figure when he tucked home debutant Emerson Palmieri’s low cross to round off a first 45 minutes to forget for the visitors.“I was waiting for it,” said Giroud. “It was important for me to score my first goal. It’s relieved me a little bit.”Hull had the chance to salvage some pride early in the second-half when Fabregas tripped Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson inside the area. But a dire night for Nigel Adkins’ men was complete when Willy Caballero saved David Meyler’s penalty. And Willian was inches away from the hat-trick his display deserved when another long-range effort came back off the post two minutes from time.Leicester joined Chelsea in the last eight as Riyad Mahrez provided the spark for the Foxes on his return to the starting line-up.The Algerian’s only appearance in Leicester’s previous three outings came as a late substitute in a 5-1 drubbing at Manchester City last weekend following his self-imposed exile from training after Leicester rejected City’s advances for the winger last month. However, he showed why the runaway Premier League leaders were interested with the teasing cross for Jamie Vardy to head home the only goal in a 1-0 win over Sheffield United.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Two of the best: Willian celebrates scoring his second goal as Chelsea beat Hull 4-0 in the FA Cup © AFP / Glyn KIRKLONDON, United Kingdom, Feb 17 – Antonio Conte believes Chelsea are ready for a season-defining few weeks after Willian starred with two goals to blow away Hull City 4-0 to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals on Friday.Just four days before facing Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, Conte named a much-changed side with Thibaut Courtois, Cesar Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard not even included in the Italian’s squad.
Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals in his first season at Old Trafford, but struggled to recapture his best form after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage during a Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht last April. The 36-year-old Swede managed only one goal for United after making his comeback in November, with his final appearance for the club against Burnley on Boxing Day.“For me, it’s always sad when the big players go in the direction of the end,” United manager Mourinho told a news conference on Friday.“I remember for example Luis Figo, after his last match, with me and with Inter Milan.“I always remember it as one of my saddest moments because I always feel very, very sorry when the big ones finish or go to the last period of their careers.“Zlatan is a huge big player that European football is losing now and forever because he will not be back to this level.”However, Mourinho added: “This period with Galaxy, these couple of years, will be very good for him and American football.”– Shaw option –Meanwhile Mourinho indicated Luke Shaw could win a reprieve despite his recent fierce criticism of the defender.Left-back Ashley Young has been struggling with a knee injury, suffered while on England duty, as United prepare to face Swansea in the Premier League on Saturday, with Shaw his likely deputy.Shaw played in United’s most recent match, a 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Brighton on March 17, but was substituted at half-time and then pilloried by Mourinho afterwards. The Portuguese manager accused Shaw of not defending well enough, and giving Brighton too much room down the right flank.Shaw is known to be angry with the way he has been treated, but Mourinho insisted the full-back had not been frozen out.“If he’s available, Luke Shaw is always an option,” Mourinho said. “Ashley Young was available to play against Brighton and I started with Luke Shaw, so that’s not a problem.”Reserve goalkeeper Sergio Romero will miss the Swansea game after suffering a knee injury during Argentina’s 6-1 defeat by Spain in Madrid on Tuesday.Romero has been United’s FA Cup ‘keeper this season, but is a major doubt for the semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on April 21 after injuring his right knee in a collision with Diego Costa.“Romero is injured, and I think he will be for a few weeks,” Mourinho, whose second-placed side are currently a huge 16 points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City, said. “I think in the end he was lucky because it was a strong contusion (bruise) and will take a little bit of time to recover.”Mourinho and Swansea counterpart Carlos Carvalhal are the only two Portuguese managers in the Premier League, and have a long-standing friendship.Carvalhal, who has taken Swansea three points clear of the relegation zone since arriving at the Welsh club in December after leaving second-tier Sheffield Wednesday, described Mourinho as the “king of coaches”, before the two men enjoyed a cordial phone conversation on Thursday.“He said I opened the door for more Portuguese coaches to leave which is something I know is true,” Mourinho told reporters.“I speak with him a couple of times every week. Last night I spoke with him a little and thanked him for his nice words. It is one thing to think something, but another to say it.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will embark on a new career with LA Galaxy in the Major Soccer League after cutting his contract short at Manchester United © AFP/File / Ian KINGTONMANCHESTER, United Kingdom, Mar 30 – Jose Mourinho has paid tribute to Zlatan Ibrahimovic by declaring his departure from Manchester United a “sad” moment for European football. The former Paris Saint-Germain striker secured a move to Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy last week after United agreed to cancel his contract three months early.
Adrien Rabiot netted a second for PSG before half-time and Timothy Weah, the son of 1995 Ballon d’Or winner and Liberia president George Weah, rounded out the victory with his first league goal.Gianluigi Buffon also produced a couple of sharp saves on his home bow in goal for PSG as coach Thomas Tuchel made a winning start at the Parc des Princes.“We played a good match with lots of intensity, especially in the first half. In the second half we managed things a bit more because we’re not yet at 100%,” PSG captain Thiago Silva told Canal+.“Some players arrived late (for pre-season) and are not ready, like myself for example. At the end of the match I had lots of cramps, but well done to all the team for the match we played today. We’re going to make more progress.”German Tuchel, who replaced Unai Emery on a two-year deal, was without a host of first-team regulars as PSG’s trio of World Cup winners — Kylian Mbappe, Presnel Kimpembe and Alphonse Areola — showed off the trophy to fans before kick-off.Edinson Cavani and Marco Verratti were also absent as Tuchel handed starts to youngsters Colin Dagba and Stanley N’Soki in defence, and fellow 19-year-old Antoine Bernede in midfield. After appearing in a 15-minute cameo at the end of last weekend’s 4-0 rout of Monaco in the Champions Trophy in China, Neymar made a long-awaited return to the line-up in Paris. He needed little time to leave his mark as Caen goalkeeper Brice Samba was punished for a sloppy pass, with Christopher Nkunku setting Neymar up for a calm, side-footed finish on his left foot.Buffon, who was expected to retire at the end of last season before electing for a new adventure abroad, became the oldest PSG player in Ligue 1 history at 40 years and six months. The 2006 World Cup winner was called into action for the first time midway through the opening period when Malik Tchokounte’s firm volley forced Buffon to punch to safety.– Buffon bails out Silva –Angel Di Maria, on target twice in the victory over Monaco, laid the ball on a plate for Rabiot to add PSG’s second on 35 minutes. The Argentine winger’s acceleration took him past Alexander Djiku and into the Caen area where he crossed for a charging Rabiot to tap in from close range.Silva was indebted to the quick reflexes of Buffon on the stroke of half-time when an attempt to head clear a cross left his keeper scrambling to turn the ball behind.Stef Peeters had Buffon beaten after the break when his free-kick smacked against the inside of the post, while a combination of Samba and the woodwork then denied Weah on 85 minutes.Nabil Fekir paraded the World Cup trophy to the Lyon fans ahead of their game at home to Amiens © AFP / PHILIPPE DESMAZESBut the US international pounced on another mistake by Samba a minute from time, Weah forcing the ball over the line after catching the Caen keeper in possession.Earlier, Bertrand Traore and Memphis Depay scored for Lyon in a 2-0 victory over Amiens.Burkina Faso forward Traore fired Lyon ahead on 24 minutes when he broke down the right side of the area and sneaked the ball through the legs of Amiens goalkeeper Regis Gurtner.Nabil Fekir, who came on as a substitute in France’s 4-2 win against Croatia in last month’s World Cup final, was not included in the Lyon squad having only returned to training on Monday.Bruno Genesio’s side coped without their captain as Dutch star Depay made the points safe with a terrific 20-yard free-kick on 75 minutes.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Neymar scored his first goal for PSG since a 5-2 win over Strasbourg in February © AFP / GERARD JULIENPARIS, France, Aug 12 – Neymar scored his first goal for Paris Saint-Germain since February as the French champions kicked off the new Ligue 1 season with a 3-0 defeat of Caen on Sunday. The Brazilian star, who scored 19 times in 20 league games before fracturing his foot last season, struck just 10 minutes into his first start for the club in almost six months.

Each threw away two-goal leads at the weekend.Gennaro Gattuso’s AC Milan lost 3-2 to Napoli, coached by his former boss Carlo Ancelotti, in their season opener and Inter were 2-2 by Torino in the San Siro, leaving Luciano Spalletti’s side with just one point from two games.Goals from Torino’s Andrea Belotti and Soualiho Meite cancelled out first-half strikes from Inter’s Croatian World Cup finalist Ivan Perisic and Stefan De Vrij.“These moments have characterised Inter in recent years,” said Spalletti, whose side have returned to the Champions League this season.“We are a team that should be fighting at the top together with four or five other sides. However, to remain at a certain level then we have to build a specific type of mentality.”Milan, meanwhile, whose first game against Genoa was postponed, remain without a point and are off the foot of the table only on goal difference.– Zielinski stars for Napoli –Napoli’s Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski bagged a brace against AC Milan. © AFP / Alberto PIZZOLIPolish midfielder Piotr Zielinski scored twice before Dries Mertens came off the bench to grab the winner as Napoli rallied from 2-0 down to beat visiting AC Milan 3-2.Napoli are reportedly ready to offer Zielinski an improved contract extension until 2023.
