DESPITE THE CONTROVERSY surrounding the new Gaeltacht Minister’s Irish language abilities, Joe McHugh has been giving BBC Radio 4 listeners a short Irish lesson.“The important thing when you’re speaking Irish is there has to be a flow to it,” Joe McHugh advised ‘Broadcasting House’ presenter Paddy O’Connell.McHugh proceeded to teach O’Connell how to say ‘go dté mar a tá tú’ (how are you) and ‘tá lá ar dóigh ann’ (it’s a great day). Listen to McHugh’s Irish lesson >When asked to translate more complicated phrases such as ‘hear much and say little’ or ‘an open mouth often catches a closed fist’, McHugh declined, saying he was looking ahead to taking a language refresher course and would not want to be “caught out on getting things wrong at this stage”.McHugh said he was “shocked, stunned, delighted, over the moon” and “quite emotional” to be nominated for the ministerial post.Asked about coming under pressure over his cúpla focail that when Taoiseach Enda Kenny asked him about his Irish language skills, he admitted they were “not great, but rusty” because he has not really been speaking it for twenty years.“It’s daunting,” he said of his portfolio, “but I’m going to go into it full steam ahead.”McHugh said his Irish refresher course would be starting first thing Monday morning. The Donegal TD said he hoped his own experiences in re-building his Irish language abilities would encourage others to do the same:There’s a vast chunk of the population that went to school, spent 14 years, got very, very good grades in their Irish, were able to speak it when they went to school and then all of a suddenly they just lose it. When you don’t use it, you lose it. And if I can refresh myself and get there in a short period of time, I hope that will be a signal to other people that have been threatening it for years.Read: Here’s how the new Gaeltacht Minister got on answering a question as Gaeilge >Poll: Does it matter that the Gaeltacht Minister isn’t fluent in Irish? >
Don’t think of this idea as late for Halloween 2010, but rather as early for Halloween 2011. It’s is a color-shifting paint trick that Watchmen fans can use to really jazz up a Rorschach costume next year. Thanks to YouTube contributor guinness0507, we find out if you mix a little thermochromic powder with transparent base paint, then transfer the paint mixture onto a piece of white fabric, you can make yourself a pretty sweet looking Rorschach mask that shifts color from the temperature of your own breath.AdChoices广告I don’t know who watches the Watchmen, but wearing this mask you will definitely have many eyes watching you Halloween 2011. Just do us a favor and make sure that the paint is completely dry before putting it over your face. We certainly don’t want anyone passing out from noxious fumes.Read more at YouTube, via Neatorama
Although ARM-powered Windows RT tablets are on the way this year, it looks like Dell’s first Windows 8 tablet will be of the x86 variety. The Latitude 10 has leaked to the web, and it’s a 10.1-inch slab powered by Intel’s Clover Trail Atom processor. Its clock speed isn’t specified, but it looks like Dell may be one of the first OEMs to deliver a tablet with Intel’s new 32NM chip — not a surprise considering their position on the global PC sales leaderboard. The display offers a resolution of 1366×768 pixels (around 155PPi), and video processing will be handled by Intel’s Imagination graphics engine.Dell will also offer SSDs with capacity up to 128GB for the Latitude 10. WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity are built in, as are 8MP rear- and 2MP front-facign cameras. Unlike a lot of tablets on the market, the Latitude 10 will feature a swappable battery, and buyers can choose between a 2 cell or 4 cell model. An optional stylus will also be available for purchase. As a nod to the enterprise, the Latitude 10 will include both a fingerprint reader and smart card reader. At 710 grams and a maximum depth of 13.4 millimeters, the Latitude 10 is slightly heavier and thicker than the new iPad, but it’s good to see that Windows 8 tablets will narrow the gap. Manufacturers of Windows 7 tablets have struggled to break the two pound barrier, though Dell managed to do it with the Latitude ST — which could very well have been the starting point for the Latitude 10.More at NeoWin
Five police officers and one cadet were shot during an armed attack against a police station in the Athens suburb of Agia Paraskevi, authorities announced early on Wednesday. All six were admitted to Athens hospitals, two of them in serious but not critical condition, along with a civilian suffering from shock after witnessing the attack. The attack occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday night when a group of unidentified persons on motorbikes passed outside the police station in Pentelis street and fired several rounds using an automatic weapon before fleeing the scene. The bullets hit five police men and a woman cadet training as a special guard, who also suffered the most serious injuries and was submitted to lengthy surgery. A police man that was shot in the belly and rushed to the 401 Military Hospital was reported to be out of the danger, though doctors are keeping him under close observation in case there are complications.Police said they had found and were investigating three motorbikes to determine whether they were used during the attack, left outside the Halandri metro station.Public Safety Minister Mihalis Chryssohoidis visited both the site of the attack and the injured police officers in hospital, afterwards stressing that the attack against them had been “cowardly, murderous and 100 percent a terrorist act”.He condemned the attack as the worst sort of attack on society.“Violence, especially murderous violence, is the worst enemy of society. Blind violence against 20-year-old youths is despicable and heinous,” he underlined, calling on the public to “rally around democracy and protect it”.The Minister committed to taking all possible action to find the perpetrators.“These murdering bullies will be arrested and turned over to justice,” the minister underlined in statements after his visit to the injured. Nuka-World will release on August 30 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC and cost $19.99 by itself, although you can download it as part of the season pass. There are rumors that more DLC and possibly another season pass will be coming to Fallout 4 in the future, but as of now official word is that this is the end (of the world). <> Bethesda Softworks has just released the first official gameplay trailer for Nuka-World, the sixth and final add-on for Fallout 4.It looks like they’re going to be sending things off in style. Nuka-World is the official theme park of everyone’s favorite Cola, and still features creepy animatronics and lots of things to kill. The more playful among us can try their hands at working games like whack-a-mole game, a shooting gallery, and basketball game, or even take a trip on the rusty, clearly-in-need-of-a-safety-inspection rides. Visit park zones like Safari Adventure, Dry Rock Gulch, Kiddie Kingdom, and the Galactic zone. There’s even a theme song! This is clearly where dreams come true. Not since Banky’s Dismaland has a theme park looked more inviting. If the idea of exploring this ruined amusement park somehow doesn’t interest you, how about the fact that this expansion will allow you to become the head of a Raider gang, and send your minions off to do your bidding. Seriously, you can use underlings to conquer settlements and be the truly wicked person you always were in your heart. You can get a glimpse of these dilapidated attractions, including a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, in the gallery below. There are even some new creatures that look like the Graboids from Tremors and appropriately amusing weapons.
