OTTAWA – Some of what was said Tuesday about the federal government’s plan to spend $4.5 billion to buy the Trans Mountain pipeline and all of Kinder Morgan Canada’s core assets, part of a strategy to rescue a proposed expansion of the oilsands pipeline.—“It must be built and it will be built.” — Finance Minister Bill Morneau.—“Make no mistake: this is an investment in Canada’s future.” — Morneau.—“We believe this is the best way to protect thousands of well-paying jobs and the safest and most effective way to get our resources to world markets.” —Morneau.—“The majority of Canadians support this project. The majority of Canadians understand that we are in a transition to a clean-growth century and we will not get there overnight. But we will get there.”— Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr.—“The prime minister is forcing Canadian taxpayers to pay for his failure. He has still failed to create certainty in the Canadian energy sector. And what’s worse, the prime minister is nationalizing a pipeline and he can’t tell Canadians the total cost. He would have Canadians believe that the only way to build the Trans Mountain pipeline is to use billions of taxpayer dollars, but it’s not. Four pipelines were built under the previous Conservative government without a dime of taxpayer money.” — Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer.—“Climate change leaders don’t spend $4.5 billion dollars on pipelines. We need a government with a vision that takes our future seriously.” — NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Twitter.—“The project was never in Canada’s national interest, but the government of Canada and the Trudeau administration got itself painted into a very tight corner by insisting it was in the national interest, insisting it must be built, insisting it would be built.” — Green party Leader Elizabeth May.—“As of today, this is the most certainty that this project has ever had. That certainty is absolutely critical.” — Alberta Premier Rachel Notley.—“The federal government has made a choice, a decision that was motivated by the decisions of a private company that gave a deadline, not to me, not to the people of British Columbia, but to someone they characterized as stakeholders. The federal government has responded and that’s their business.” — British Columbia Premier John Horgan.—“The decision raises some real questions … the federal government has done something out of necessity. The message is that our system here is broken and that it’s going to repel private sector investment if we don’t do something to fix it. So we need to fix it.” — Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister.—“Not only will it enable our producers to get their product safely to global markets, where they can get a fair price, but it will also create thousands of jobs in communities across Canada. Additionally, it will generate billions in economic activity.” — Canadian Chamber of Commerce.—“The project has always been in the national interest. CEPA is concerned about the implications of the government’s financial intervention for future transmission pipeline projects. We do not believe that this outcome will instill investor confidence in Canada.” — Chris Bloomer, president and CEO, Canadian Energy Pipeline Association.—“The federal government’s decision to purchase Trans Mountain is a totally reckless use of public money. It leaves Canadians on the hook for a risky pipeline that lacks a viable business case, flouts Canada’s commitment to Indigenous rights and reconciliation, and faces intractable legal, political and regulatory obstacles.” — Patrick DeRochie of Environmental Defence.—“This is the moment in history where Justin Trudeau has revealed that he never cared about Indigenous rights or reconciliation. The cost that they did not calculate in their $4.5 billion purchase is that Indigenous front lines will stop this pipeline.” — Will George, Tsleil-Waututh member and spokesperson for the Coast Salish Watch House.—“This decision will haunt the Trudeau government. Those of us who knocked on doors for him will not forget that he took billions of dollars from Canadian families to buy out an oil pipeline that violates Indigenous rights and our commitments on climate change. Thousands of people have committed to stand with Indigenous leaders to stop this pipeline. All hell is about to break loose in British Columbia.” — Tzeporah Berman, deputy director, Stand.earth.—
During the sold-out tour with Def Leppard, legendary rock star Bret Michaels was inspired by his unconditional love for his daughters to write and shoot a very raw, inspirational and emotional song and video for and about his youngest daughter and the song’s namesake, Jorja Bleu. The song’s release date happens to also be Jorja’s birthday. Following in her father’s philanthropic footsteps she has requested that a portion of the proceeds from the song will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The video is equally as emotional, as it encompasses the father and daughter’s journey from her birth right up to today, with never-before-seen photos from Bret’s personal and private collection.Michaels, a brain hemorrhage survivor and lifelong diabetic states that “Jorja Bleu” was recorded on the road in his tour bus as it was written. Michaels performed all parts himself with the focus on positive lyrics and a message of faith that would inspire and encourage his daughter, drawing from his own tragic and amazing life experiences which are soon to be featured in an exclusive “USA Today” piece about the award-winning artist. Once the demo was done, Bret chose to not re-record it in a larger L.A. or Nashville studio out of fear of losing any of the raw emotion captured in the original recording. The video was shot in a friend’s studio in the Midwest during the day before one of the sold out shows on his current tour.“Jorja Bleu” is the long-awaited sequel to his hit song “Raine” (written for his oldest daughter), another emotional charged and personal song that helped skyrocket Bret into his highly successful solo career. As a solo artist in the years between these two songs the BMI and ASCAP award winning songwriter, has had several monumental song writing achievements such as having the most viewed debut song/video in CMT’s history, along with the viral sensation “Beautiful Soul” which was the critically acclaimed pop ballad, inspired and written about a couple he met on Christmas day during a visit with patients at Barrow Neurological Institute, where Bret himself was cared for during his tragic brain hemorrhage. The highly-anticipated new single “Jorja Bleu,” which in many ways is the sequel to his song “Raine,” became available Friday, May 5th on iTunes and all other digital retailers and subscription audio formats.
HP has unveiled its latest tablet offering, the Slate 7, and webOS is nowhere to be found. As predicted, HP has opted to give Android a go this time around and do its best to forget about the $1.2 billion it dropped on the Palm acquisition. Like many other 7-inch Android tablets, the Slate 7 will sell for less than $200. HP has priced it at $169, just $10 more than Amazon charges for the first-generation Kindle Fire. The Slate 7’s specs line up nicely with the Kindle Fire, too. It’s based on a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor and features 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (double the Kindle’s base), and the 7-inch display also has a native resolution of 1024 x 600. HP is hoping that high-quality audio processing will help the Slate 7 stand out: it’s shipping with Beats Audio tech on board, just like many of the company’s laptops. Two color options are being offered: a more mundane silver and Beats red for those who want a tablet that’s a bit more eye-catching.Initial impressions of the Slate 7 are that it’s a decent tablet at a very good price. It doesn’t offer the performance of the Nexus 7 Best Price at Amazon and its Tegra 3 quad-core chip, but for $30 less and with a micro SD card slot for expansion, HP has put together an intriguing little budget tablet that’s definitely going to catch the eye of some shoppers. It’s going to have plenty of competition when it hits the streets in May, though, with companies like Acer and Asus also releasing tablets in the $160 range. As nice as the Slate 7 might be, there’s a whole bunch of Palm fans out there that will look at it, remember the DOA Touchpad Go, and wonder “What if?”
Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri insists Cristiano Ronaldo is not angry despite missing a golden opportunity to score his first goal for the club. The Portuguese captain failed to score on his home debut as Juventus defeated Lazio 2-0 at the Allianz stadium in Turin.Ronaldo seemed certain to open his Serie A account in the 75th minute at the Allianz Stadium. Joao Cancelo rolled the ball across to his compatriot but goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha did just enough to stop him from tapping in from four metres, instead it ricocheted off Ronaldo’s feet and fell to Mario Mandzukic to score into an empty net.Upon this miss, the former Real Madrid star offered a wry smile before throwing his hands up in the air, and Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri promised that the Portuguese star was not upset after the miss.Vidic: “Ronaldo is the most professional footballer I’ve seen” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Nemanja Vidic opened up on how a 21-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s professionalism left him stunned at Manchester United.“He is not angry at all, he smiled because these things happen,” Allegri said after the match, according to ESPN.Just as it was on Ronaldo’s debut last week, when Juventus won 3-2 at Chievo Verona, it was down to his teammates to fire the Bianconeri to victory, with Miralem Pjanic also netting as the seven-time defending champions downed Lazio.“It’s only two weeks that he’s with us,” Allegri said of Ronaldo’s adaptation.“He’s intelligent and understands that Italian football is different to that in Spain. Today he played well also in defense, everyone is waiting for his first goal. I’m happy with how he’s fitting in, he is a very humble lad.”
It’s an old rule: As reader habits change, publishers must adapt to survive.Traffic for business content—traditionally living in the 9 to 5 world of desktops—has risen considerably on mobile devices. And that base is only getting bigger. Business publications expect more than a quarter of their audiences to access content exclusively on digital platforms within the next two years, according to a recent study by the Alliance for Audited Media (AAM).But even though they see the rising tide of mobile users, b-to-b publishers aren’t sure how to proceed. The same AAM study reports that 60 percent are undecided about how exactly they’ll optimize for mobile. Meanwhile, close to two-thirds of consumer magazines already have a definitive approach. B-to-b publishers ALM and FierceMarkets have begun to take significant steps to optimize their content for mobile consumption though. Both have rolled out the changes incrementally, but they’re each being careful to address the full spectrum of the user experience. Having a disjointed, part-mobile, part-desktop device strategy puts a ceiling on your mobile potential.Piece-by-Piece: ALM’S Mobile StrategyALM is in the process of optimizing its digital properties for mobile devices after bringing on Jeffrey Litvack, senior vice president of digital media, last fall.Under Litvack, the company first enhanced its newsletters with responsive design in March. Overall open rates have jumped 60 percent since the change, with more than 40 percent of opens now coming via smartphone and tablet. Clickthroughs to ALM mobile web properties have risen 50 percent quarter-over-quarter. Mobile now accounts for 20 percent of the group’s total traffic.Despite the success of initial opens and clicks mobile users were being sent to full desktop sites. Switching from a highly-formatted, easy-to-read email to a small-text website is jarring, so getting readers to a second article was a challenge. Mobile bounce rates were a problem area that ALM has made it a priority to lower, Litvack says.“Doing one without the other doesn’t make a lot of sense,” he says. “If we’ve got these incredible open rates with an optimized [newsletter] experience and then they click through to a non-optimized website, you’ve lost the user.”As such, ALM’s completed the device experience by launching separate mobile sites for its stable of web properties in May. No more pinching and zooming, Litvack says. More than that, the new sites have a simplistic list layout that emphasizes breaking news and recency over analysis, education or services—content that’s less likely to draw interaction on a smaller screen.‘Our Mobile Strategy is Actually Email’FierceMarkets got into the mobile space early—work on an app started before the iPhone actually came out—but it still relies on the basics, says the company’s president, Maurice Bakley. With an eye toward building volume, FierceMarkets rolled each of its eight verticals, ranging from telecom to government, into its first app. Mobile and responsive design sites followed with more specific points of access for audiences. Between the two, a number of the group’s sites now get close to one-third of their traffic via mobile.FierceMarkets has always focused on its email newsletters though. It’s promoted engagement with the email itself by releasing full-text versions of articles instead of linking to its sites. The strategy has been successful so far, despite running counter to the quick-hit, headline-heavy tenets of mobile. Bakley says his team is working on responsive design templates for its newsletters, but admits finding a middle ground between the two models will be a challenge.“They have an expectation of what they’re going to get,” he says. “We don’t want to dumb it down too much just because they’re on a mobile device. Even though they’re on a mobile device and want readability, they still want access, they still want what they’re used to. And let’s face it, email is still the number-one thing people do with their phones.”FierceMarkets is in a unique position between email and content though. And as an even bigger portion of its audience comes via mobile, they’re working to reconcile it.“We used to say it flippantly before, but now we’re a little more serious about it,” he says. “Our mobile strategy is actually email.” The Lead-Gen ProblemWhile b-to-b publishers are getting better at serving editorial content optimized for mobile devices, advertising poses a separate challenge, specifically in lead generation.“The traditional b-to-b advertiser these days is very lead-gen focused, and lead-gen is a difficult thing to do on a mobile device,” says FierceMarkets’ Bakley. “When was the last time you filled out a 10-question drop-down form on your phone? Some of those models don’t translate well.”Forms and questionnaires aren’t fun to fill out with your thumbs, but there are ways to adapt your lead-gen efforts.1. AppsCollect in-app user data once a device-owner downloads your branded app. You can see what they’re reading, how long they’re staying with it and monitor social sharing. In the harder-to-track, sometimes cookie-less world of the mobile web, that’s invaluable. With push messaging, you can get content and sales offers out to your audience without email.2. Call to actionOn mobile platforms, users are increasingly open to making a call over filling out a form, according to media consultancy BIA/Kelsey. Moreover, lead quality and conversion rates are higher on the phone than online. Whether they ultimately prefer one over the other will probably depend on your audience, but its important to give them options.3. Ask for lessDetermine the minimum amount information you have to have. Many lead-gen providers will be able to fill in the gaps. For example, if you get a phone number, they’ll usually be able connect it with an address. The longer the form, the less likely your reader is going to complete it.
More information: More ties than we thought, arXiv:1401.8242 [cs.FL] arxiv.org/abs/1401.8242AbstractWe extend the existing enumeration of neck tie knots to include tie knots with a textured front, tied with the narrow end of a tie. These tie knots have gained popularity in recent years, based on reconstructions of a costume detail from The Matrix Reloaded, and are explicitly ruled out in the enumeration by Fink and Mao (2000). We show that the relaxed tie knot description language that comprehensively describes these extended tie knot classes is either context sensitive or context free. It has a sub-language that covers all the knots that inspired the work, and that is regular. From this regular sub-language we enumerate 177 147 distinct tie knots that seem tieable with a normal necktie. These are found through an enumeration of 2 046 winding patterns that can be varied by tucking the tie under itself at various points along the winding. Most men don’t consider more than one, two or maybe three ways to tie their tie, if they tie one at all—but the fact is, there are far more ways to do it than most would ever imagine and because of that mathematicians have at times set themselves the task of trying to discern if the number is finite, and if so, what that number might be.Back in 1999, a pair of researches (Yong Mao and Thomas Fink) with the University of Cambridge came up with a mathematical language to describe all the actions that can be performed in tying a tie and used it to calculate that the total number of possible outcomes was a very reasonable 85. In this new effort the researchers say that number is far too small because it leaves out some good possibilities. They’ve extended the mathematical language and have used it to create a new upper limit—177,147.Vejdemo-Johansson apparently came to believe that the number produced by Mao and Fink was too small after noting the unique tie knot in the movie “The Matrix Reloaded”—a knot that didn’t appear in the researchers list, which meant something wasn’t quite right. In reexamining the criteria that Mao and Fink used for inclusion, they noted the pair restricted the number of tucks that would occur at the end of the tie tying, to just one. The pair, it was noted, also assumed that any knot created would naturally be covered in part by a flat section of fabric. Also, they restricted the number of windings that could be made to just eight, believing any more than that would cause the tie to become too short.Vejdemo-Johansson adjusted the parameters and added nomenclature for describing tie movements and after putting it all together, used their new math language to calculate the new total number of possible tie knots—though, it might not be the last word—some of their parameter assignments, such as setting the maximum winds at 11, for example, could perhaps be adjusted for longer ties, or those made of much thinner material. Firefox 69: userChrome.css and userContent.css disabled by default by Martin Brinkmann on May 24, 2019 in Firefox – Last Update: May 24, 2019 – 130 commentsMozilla plans to land a change in Firefox 69 that disables the loading of userChrome.css and userContent.css by default to improve performance. The files userChrome.css and userContent.css are used to modify content of webpages or the browser itself using CSS instructions. The option to do so is not removed but Mozilla plans to make it opt-in instead of opt-out. The organization states that not having to look for the two files on startup improves the start-up performance of the Firefox browser.Firefox users who use the files already will have the feature enabled for them automatically to avoid disruptions to their workflows or expectations. The preference needs to be flipped to True on new installations only starting with the release of Firefox 69.Tip: check out customizing Firefox with userchrome.css.Timeline for the change (proposed, subject to change):Firefox 68: Firefox checks if userChrome.css or userContent.css exist. If yes, preference will be set to True to allow the loading of these files on browser start. National and local officials in the Central Pacific canton of Garabito are stepping up measures to ensure theWorld Surfing Games that will take place in Jacó beach Aug. 6 – 14 is a safe, healthy success for the country.Public agencies will also be on the look out for businesses trying to take advantage of the visitors expected to crowd the popular beach town. Organizers said they expect nearly 100,000 people to attend the area during the competition.Zika surveillanceThe Health Ministry reported Wednesday that the confirmed cases of Zika virus in the country have reached 351. More than half of those cases are patients in Central Pacific cantons, including Garabito.Media outlets around the world in recent days reported that the surfing event will take place in one of Costa Rica’s most Zika-affected regions. But Minister Fernando Llorca said the number of confirmed cases in Central Pacific cantons has decreased in the past two weeks.Llorca said that despite the decrease in cases, health officials maintain a permanent coordination with the organizers of the World Surfing Games. He said the Health Ministry has carried out periodic fumigations, garbage collection and inspections to eliminate mosquito-breeding sites along the Pacific coast this year. The effect of each fumigation lasts just over a week, so these actions will be suspended this week, Llorca said Wednesday.Pollution-free certificationThe Costa Rican Surfing Federation, the Sports Ministry and the Garabito Municipality will seek recognition for the World Surfing Games as a pollution-free, or “Blue Flag” event. Mayor Tobías Murillo Rodríguez said the municipality rented three additional garbage trucks to maintain waste collection in the district 24-7.Besides increasing garbage collection, the municipality performed special cleaning projects at the beach and in various local rivers. The Water and Sewers Institute’s water laboratory also evaluated the quality of seawater at Jacó beach in late July. Results of those evaluations certified the beach as “A Class,” which means seawater in Jacó is bacteriologically safe for recreational purposes. The quality of seawater is one of the most important aspects in the evaluation required to obtain a Blue Flag certification in the beaches category. The Blue Flag program recognizes beaches for trash-free sands, clean ocean and drinking water, access to showers and restrooms and waste disposal programs.Surf Federation President Randall Chaves said he hopes all these actions will help boost the tourism potential of the Central Pacific area and give Costa Rica a name as a world leader in organizing environmentally friendly sporting events.Price hikes and paying taxesThe Costa Rican Chamber of Hotels (CCH) warned earlier this week of a “disproportionate increase in reservations at rental homes and condos, whose owners might be dodging taxes and insurance payments.”A query of lodging options in Jacó on the accommodation-sharing service Airbnb on Thursday showed almost 100 options of houses and apartments available during the week of the surfing games. Prices for the full week range from ₡84,000 to ₡500,000 ($151-$900).In a news release, the Chamber of Hotels demanded that the Tax Administration, the Social Security System, the National Insurance Institute and the municipality of Garabito carry out “a close inspection across the canton to find insurance and tax dodgers.”Chamber president Gustavo Araya said the World Surfing Games “can be a good opportunity for public agencies to collect taxes just like they do with all of us legal business owners.”Garabito Mayor Tobías Murillo said Thursday that the sports event represents a great business opportunity for the canton. However, he is aware that some might try to overcharge for their products and services and some might try to conduct businesses without a permit.Murillo said he knows it’s almost impossible for local hotels and other lodging options to accommodate the large number of visitors expected. “However those who will be renting their homes or properties must fulfill their tax duties,” he said. The mayor said the municipality is ready to go after those seeking to dodge taxes. In the case of people offering accommodations, municipal officials are currently making an official list of online and print ads that will be used for verification purposes during tax collection.Street vending and securityMayor Murillo said one of the municipality’s main goals is to prevent street vendors from affecting local businesses and disturbing visitors. The Garabito municipality did not issue any permits to sell products on the street during the surf competition, only granting temporary business licenses for selling food and other products within a special fairground located at the beach.“All merchandise sold outside this area, along the beach or on nearby streets will be confiscated,” the mayor said.Murillo said he’s aware that it is very difficult to fully control street vendors and that some of them will risk bringing their merchandise to Jacó, “but we will make every effort to avoid it,” he said. The city’s 50 Municipal Police officers will work alongside National Police officers to provide security for the event around the clock. The Public Security Ministry will report on Friday the number of officers who will be patrolling the Jacó area during the event. The ministry’s press office reported Thursday that it is still reviewing the event’s compliance with security requirements.Read more coverage of the World Surfing Games here.
